Mount Barker

Mount Barker is an attractive old style town  situated on three important tourist routes – Albany Highway from Perth to Albany, Muirs Highway linking the South West to the Great Southern through Manjimup, and the Mount Barker – Porongurup Road.

The spectacular spring wildflower season attracts large numbers of tourists and good road systems provide access to the south coast with the spectacular coastline near Denmark and Albany a comfortable half hour drive.

Mt Barker is 50 kilometres from the Southern Ocean so its Mediterranean climate displays some continentality.  It is the coolest of the sub-regions in the Great Southern and has high diurnal (daily) temperature fluctuations and occasional  spring frosts.

Mt Barker marri soils are characterised by lateritic gravelly and sandy loams derived from granite protrusions. They provide low yields that concentrate colour and flavour in the wines.

Mt Barker produces world class Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other varieties that thrive include Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
